Hey, how are ya? 

I'm sure you've heard by now about the tragic events in Haiti.  An earthquake rocked the city of Port-Au-Prince resulting in the tragic loss of thousands of lives, not to mention the unprecedented devastation of buildings and infra-structure.    If we're not careful, we could look at this unfortunate turn of events and  begin to justify the death's and injuries of so many people by pointing fingers and blaming.  After all, it's Haiti a country steeped in voodoo, withcraft, evil practices, immorality, licentiousness, etc. "It was God's judgment", some would argue.

I'm reminded of the story found in the gospel of Luke 13 where it tells us that Pilate mingled the blood of some Galileans in with their sacrifice.  Jesus asked this question, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things?  Or those eighteen on whom the tower of Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem?  Then Jesus makes this statement, not once , but twice in respect to each scenario, "I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."

Let's not be judgmental towards Haiti.  Yes, Haiti has an unusually high culture of evil practice in a country that desparately needs the Kingdom of God to impact and transform it.  But the Bible tells us that Jesus' sacrifice appeased the wrath of a Holy God 2000 years ago when Jesus hung on the cross and said, "It is finished".  Unless we repent, we will all likewise perish.  Jesus didn't come to destroy men's lives, He came to save them.   Apart from Christ, sin takes its toll, and subjects us to it's cruel and destructive effects. Our planet is broken, and we suffer the consequences of it's defects.  Only in and through Christ Jesus can we avoid the curse, and truly enjoy the overcoming, security of God's loving provision and protection.
